Cancellation of the flight: Passenger rights compensation, voucher, refund.
If your flight was canceled by the airline company, prior notification aside, you may be entitled to compensation. The passenger has the right to request a refund, voucher, or alternative flight. The amount of compensation depends on the distance between the initial and final airports:
- Distance up to 1500 km – 250 Euros
- Distance between 1500 km and 3500 km – 400 Euros
- Distance over 3500 km – 600 Euros.
Right to request a refund of the ticket cost
In the event of flight cancellation, the passenger has the right to request a full refund of the ticket cost (refund). An alternative is to ask the airline for ticket replacement or transfer to another transport at the destination. The airline may offer the passenger a voucher for future use. The passenger should choose the most convenient option available in the situation.
The airline is obliged to take care of passengers
According to the EC 261/2004 regulation of the European Union, airlines are required to inform passengers about their rights in case of flight disruptions. For example, if your flight was canceled, and the airline offers an alternative flight the next day, the airline must also inform the passenger about the right to compensation, food vouchers, and accommodation from the airport to the place of accommodation and return.
If you incur expenses, you have the right to claim reimbursement from the airline. It is necessary to keep all receipts or checks, which will be used to claim reimbursement from the airline. Expenses should be reasonable.
When the passenger is not entitled to compensation for flight cancellation?
Regulations protect both passengers’ and airlines’ rights.
There are exceptional circumstances when the airline is not obligated to compensate for canceled flights. For example;
- Bad weather, which is truly beyond the airline’s control. However, if other airlines continue flights under the same or similar conditions, the airline may be liable for compensation for the inconvenience caused to passengers.
- Airlines are required to notify passengers of flight cancellations at least 14 days in advance, but the right to a refund of the ticket cost remains.
- Political instability
- Strikes of airport staff and air traffic control staff.
- Any other circumstances beyond the control of the airline.
