In the event of flight delays:
When it comes to compensation for flight delays:
Passengers should be compensated if flight is delayed for 3 hours or more at the designated location. It’s important to note that boarding delay should not be mistaken for departure delay. Flight delay compensation should not be subject to exceptional circumstances beyond the airline’s control, which may vary based on the airline’s interpretation. For reasons beyond your control, you have the right to request vouchers for meals, beverages, phone calls. If your flight is delayed significantly and you’re stranded overnight at the airport, the airline is obligated to provide accommodation, transportation from and to the airport, and other necessities. According to the EC Regulation 261/2004, the amount of compensation is determined based on the distance between the initial and final airports. Compensation is not contingent upon the amount paid in the ticket.
Distance up to 1500 km – 250 Euros
Distance between 1500 km and 3500 km – 400 Euros
Distance over 3500 km – 600 Euros.
Today, the most comprehensive regulation is precisely the one established by the EC Regulation 261/2004, implemented by the European Union.
What situations are covered by the European Union regulations?
When you travel from the territory of the European Union to the territory of the European Union, When you travel from the territory of the European Union to a non-European Union territory, When you travel from a non-European Union territory to the territory of the European Union with an airline registered in the European Union. It should be noted that if these conditions are met, you are protected by EC Regulation 261/2004, regardless of nationality and the amount paid for the ticket.
However, the law also protects the rights of airlines. There are situations when compensation is not offered to passengers. You are not entitled to compensation if the flight is delayed due to the following reasons:
- Weather conditions
- Airport closure
- Airport staff strikes

- Bird strikes (which happens quite frequently)
- Any force majeure situation that the airline’s responsibility exempts from.
